What Is Crypto Gain?

Crypto gain refers to the profit realized from selling cryptocurrency at a price higher than the purchase price. Just like stocks, you calculate gain by subtracting your cost basis from your proceeds.

Cryptocurrency markets are known for extreme volatility — gains of 100%+ and losses of 50%+ can happen in weeks. This makes tracking your actual profit and ROI essential for smart portfolio management.

Whether you're trading Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, or any altcoin, this calculator works the same way. Enter your buy price, sell price, and quantity to see your exact profit, ROI percentage, and investment breakdown.

Popular Cryptocurrencies

Bitcoin (BTC)

The original cryptocurrency and largest by market cap. BTC has seen returns of 100-1000%+ across various bull markets, but also 50-80% drawdowns in bear markets.

Ξ

Ethereum (ETH)

The leading smart contract platform. ETH has historically outperformed BTC in bull markets with higher volatility. DeFi and NFT activity drive additional value.

🪙

Altcoins

Smaller cryptocurrencies can offer massive gains but carry higher risk. Some altcoins have returned 10,000%+, while many others have gone to zero.

Crypto Tax Considerations

Taxable Events

Selling crypto, trading one crypto for another, and spending crypto are all taxable events. Simply holding (HODLing) is not taxed until you sell.

Holding Period

Short-term (held <1yr): taxed as income (10-37%). Long-term (held 1+yr): taxed at 0%, 15%, or 20%. The holding period can save you thousands in taxes.

Tracking Cost Basis

Multiple purchases at different prices create different cost bases. Methods include FIFO, LIFO, and Specific Identification. Use crypto tax software for complex portfolios.

DeFi & Staking

Staking rewards, lending income, and airdrop tokens are all considered taxable income at the fair market value when received. Track everything carefully.

Crypto Gain FAQs

How do I calculate crypto profit?

Profit = (Sell Price − Buy Price) × Quantity. If you bought 0.5 BTC at $28,000 and sold at $67,000, your profit is ($67,000 − $28,000) × 0.5 = $19,500.

Are crypto gains taxable?

Yes. In most countries, crypto gains are taxable. In the U.S., they're treated as capital gains. Short-term holdings (<1 year) are taxed at your income tax rate; long-term holdings (1+ years) qualify for lower capital gains rates.

What about partial coin amounts?

Crypto is infinitely divisible. You can buy 0.001 BTC or 0.00001 ETH. This calculator handles any decimal amount. The math works the same regardless of whether you own full coins or fractions.

Does trading one crypto for another trigger taxes?

Yes. Swapping BTC for ETH (or any crypto-to-crypto trade) is a taxable event. It's treated as if you sold the first crypto at fair market value and used the proceeds to buy the second one.

How volatile are crypto returns?

Extremely volatile. Bitcoin has historically seen 80%+ drawdowns in bear markets and 300-1000%+ gains in bull markets. Altcoins are even more volatile. Only invest what you can afford to lose.
